CULTURE

The Essential Play in Sports and Business

Like everyone else watching the Rugby World Cup in France over the past few weeks, I’ve been through an emotional rollercoaster watching some incredible rugby being played by amazingly talented teams with some great upsets and some personally less enjoyable moments…

However, something that struck me really hard recently is the culture. Not just the culture of rugby but how vital culture is to each player, team, and nation.

Listening to a great interview on The Rugby Pod with Simon Raiwalui, coach for the Fijian Rugby team, he cited one of the most meaningful and effective tools for performing so well to date was the entire squad reconnecting with their culture – the connection to:

  • who they are
  • where they’re from
  • who they’re playing for

I can’t help but draw parallels between the world of sports and business.

Culture is the fundamental play that drives both.

In the business world, where metrics, KPIs, and bottom lines often dominate the conversation, culture is an intangible element often overlooked. Yet, this very element can make or break an organization’s success.

Just as every rugby team has its unique spirit and camaraderie, every company has its heartbeat. The shared values, beliefs, and norms guide how employees interact, make decisions, and approach their work. It is the unwritten code that dictates “how things are done around here.”

In marketing, culture is equally crucial. Brands that resonate most with consumers have a solid cultural identity that aligns with the values and aspirations of their target audience. In an age of social media and digital transparency, consumers are more informed and discerning than ever.

They don’t just want to know what you’re selling; they want to see what you stand for.

Watching rugby, I’m reminded how a strong, cohesive culture can drive a team to greatness. Similarly, in business, companies with a strong culture often report higher levels of employee engagement, satisfaction, and retention.

As I eagerly await the next match and dive into more rugby, I’m also pondering: Are we giving culture the importance it deserves in our professional lives? Are we fostering an environment where everyone is aligned with a shared vision?

These are just some musings from a passionate rugby fan. And hey, if you have any thoughts on this or want to chat about the game, let’s connect!
